The Thieving Magpies are putting their own spin on classic rock, rhythm and blues from down the decades and a whole lot of jamming in the spur of the moment. .

The Thieving Magpies were formed at the end of 2016 when founder member Paul Harrison decided to “rock out” Paul is a well-known and highly respected musician across Cumbria. As a solo acoustic performer, he has played many a festival including Solfest and Kendal Calling. He was in Rezzonator with well known bluesman Phil Saunders, the infectious reggae band The Northern Reggae Generator, eventually going on to co-front popular roots band Room Full of Mirrors. With three original albums to their name, the Mirrors  became immensely popular, sharing bills with everyone from the Peatbog Fairies to Midge Ure. Paul writes: “I just felt compelled to return to the blues rock roots of my youth. Putting our own spin on classic blues and rock, with a degree of reggae-fixation!!”

The Magpies have had an incredible time since   the restrictions of the pandemic were lifred with 196 gigs bookings in 2022at festivals such as 
Summer Festival, Askhambury, Maryport Blues Festival, Grasmere Guzzler, Cockermouth Live, Quayfest, Eden Valley  Festival, Wild Festivals Programme, Brookfest, Seafest, Whalley Life, Sheafstock, Harley Davidson Fest, Iron Ore Festival, Chillifest and regular known venues across the North of England.

Robbie Jay Coplen our bass player has enjoyed many years of live performance after arriving on the Barrow music scene at the tender age of 13. He soon became a local favourite as one half of young acoustic duo ‘Jumbo Jamz’ who played throughout the Furness area persistently for the next three years. While studying music at Kendal College, Robbie joined forces with the Chadelics, becoming their lead guitarist and performing all over the country. Robbie also enjoyed busy festival seasons and has performed at some of Cumbria’s finest festivals, including a main stage slot at Kendal Calling. Shortly before completing a degree in Music, Robbie went on to try his hand at playing bass for another popular Cumbrian band, Serene, who have seen their own fair share of busy festival seasons and played all over North West. Now thumping grooves for the Thieving Magpies Robbie continues to bring an exciting performance to audiences far and wide.”.

Keyboard Player Alan Whitmore who joined the band in early 2017 is mostly known for his role as Benny Anderson in the international ABBA Tribute band VOULEZ VOUS. He also played briefly in the same role with acts such a SWEDE DREAMZ and THANK ABBA OR THE MUSIC. He has also performed with other national touring tribute bands such as Kate Bush tribute act “Dreaming of Kate” and the motown band “Baby I need your Loving’”. In 2015 Alan appeared on Pete Shirley’s album “Sunset Katy and other stories” which has been featured several times on BBC and Digital Radio stations including North American Radio. Alan writes “I love the fresh challenge of playing a different style of music and genre with the Thieving Magpies. It’s such an amazing experience to be in a  band with a very powerful guitarist and where I can really express myself”

Jake Dakin on drums completes the line-up - Jake is well known across the area and has played at many of the larger local festivals such as Solfest,, Grasmere Guzzler, Beatherder, and Lancaster Festival. Jake started playing during secondary school. and then trained at music college. He was in two bands at college where he gained experience in gigging and touring.. After college  Jake went on to play with bands such as the Righteous Bees and Shallamarra. and  he  also played with Paul in the Room Full of Mirrors . We are delighted to have Jake drumming with us.

With a compact PA Light show and professional smoke/mister if appropriate this is the all-round entertainment package to light up any event!
